Retired Teacher Spends “All Day Long, All Winter Long” in His New Woodshop

When this retired teacher got the go-ahead from his wife for a new woodshop, he started talking to multiple builders that very day. But one in particular stood out with his willingness to listen and collaborate. Get the details on the process and the ultimate building, which the owner describes as a “wonderful shop.”

What the owner wanted

Tedd wanted to upgrade from his basement workshop to a separate building dedicated to woodworking. But he wasn’t willing to settle for just any building—or builder.

“I’m picky,” he explains. “I stop and look at what’s the grain in this wood or what’s the pitch of the roof. That all is important to me, and a lot of [builders] couldn’t care less.”

For Tedd to have a building he’d ultimately be satisfied with, he wanted someone who appreciated his attention to detail and his unique vision for what we wanted in a woodshop.

What was special about the project

According to Tedd, a building like this requires a leap from dreaming to doing. He says he has a lot of friends who tell him, “‘I would love to have a shop like that,’” but they hesitate to make the next move.

Based on Tedd’s experience and the building he has today, his advice for them is to take action. “I would say make a plan and do it.”

And if you’re worried about the process and expense? Tedd says, “It’s not as hard and complicated as you think. I was a schoolteacher. I’m not loaded with money.”

Who helped build it

Tedd chose Greg Drechsler, owner of Drechsler Construction, as his builder. Greg is a certified Wick builder with nearly 30 years of experience. He focuses on making the building process not just hassle-free but also fun. And it all starts with understanding the customer’s perspective.

Tedd says, “I felt like we were working together as a team all of the time, and it wasn’t just Greg telling me, ‘This is how Wick does it, this is how we do it.’ He always listened to my ideas, and then we’d kick ’em back and forth.”

The outcome speaks for itself. “That’s how we ended up with what we have here today,” says Tedd. “I’m in here all day long, all winter long, sometimes ‘til 11 o’clock at night.”

Why a pole barn from Wick Buildings was the right choice

Tedd now has a new woodshop that’s not only extremely comfortable but also great-looking. More than that, because the building is from Wick, he’s gained a variety of advantages, including the following:

Superior lumber. To make our buildings stronger and last longer, we use only lumber that meets or exceeds machine-graded specs for all structural components, from trusses and columns to girts and purlins. In addition to the visual benefits of this cleaner lumber, it’s at least 15% stronger than regular lumber.

Durable steel. All Wick pole barns include full-hard exterior steel, with 80,000 PSI hardness or better, resulting in fewer dents. That steel is also G-90 galvanized for better corrosion protection.

High-performance paint. Our paint coating is warrantied not to chip or crack for 40 years and comes in a spectrum of colors. Highlights of Tedd’s new building include burnished slate for the steel walls and gable, and beige for the roof.

Exceptional quality. Wick buildings are meant to be low maintenance and are therefore incredibly reliable. That means Tedd can enjoy more time on his woodworking projects, not on building upkeep.
