A little background on the contest: The NFBA (National Frame Builders Association) Building of the Year contest consists of 24 award categories. We’ll be showcasing our entries in Agricultural, Commercial and Suburban categories. Be sure to check out our Agricultural entries, featured in a previous post.

McCarter Construction Workshop

McCarter Construction Workshop
Constructed in South Lyon, Michigan, this materials storage shop includes a 6’ overhang to protect it from the elements during truck-loading. Unique features include:
- Raised Lower Chord trusses
- James Hardie siding
- Cultured stone wainscot
- Attached to a concrete retaining wall on one end
- 42” x 54” copper-topped cupola with large copper eagle weathervane

Castle Rock Inn Restaurant

Castle Rock Inn Restaurant
Built in Muscoda, WI, this bar and restaurant includes a number of unique features:
- Raised Lower Chord trusses
- Trapezoid windows
- Stamped concrete floor
- 2 units — bar and restaurant
- Open ceiling

Condo Storage at Bay Harbor

Condo Storage at Bay Harbor
The Condo storage for four units was built in Bay Harbor, Michigan, along with the next featured entry. Includes a lounge with a kitchen and bathroom.
- Open cedar-wrapped truss over foyer

- Full concrete floor
Service Center at Bay Harbor

Service Center at Bay Harbor
This electric car service center was built in Bay Harbor, Michigan. Its unique features include:
- Wainscot steel
- Cedar-wrapped foyer post
- Cultured stone
- Open cedar-wrapped truss over foyer
- 8’ wide wraparound porch with cedar-trim and post wrap

Cold Springs Land LLC
Constructed in Minocqua, WI, this commercial office space includes the following unique features:
- Two 10’ x 9’ overhead doors
- Stone wainscot
- Wood pillars
- Covered entries

Institutional Building
Lincoln County Humane Society
Built by Willie Kimmons – Wick Buildings, Inc.
Lincoln County Humane Society
The Humane Society raised the funds for some of this project through donations, in addition to a mortgage for the remaining portion. A retired Merrill High School teacher stopped in to pet the cats one day — and paid off the mortgage.
Unique features:
- 6:12 roof pitch
- In-floor heat with 24 zones
- Acoustical ceiling
- Acoustical wall panels
- Epoxy floor with cove base
- 8” block wall filled with mason sand for soundproofing
- Dog area supplied with gutter system, pitched to a flushing system

This institution building is a day facility for developmentally disabled people. It includes a number of unique features:

- Dry sprinkler system
- Hardie siding
- Cedar columns
- Porcelain tile wainscot
